Today with my mate Ross, we decided a cinema trip was in order, having being Ghostbusters Frozen Empire, the last film i watched at showcase, was time to watching something a bit different. So we headed over to our local Peterborough Showcase Cinema. This article won't focus on the cinema so much but more of the film its self.
On to Business
Be warned this may contain spoilers, having not read up about Civil War i was unsure what to expect, sure it looked like a fairly good action film, it was anything but this, sure there is action in the film, but its in the style of an older film, building on a story. The film starts off with a civil war going on in America with the Western Forces rising up against the American Government. But this is not a story about the war kicking off but more about 4 journalists travelling from one part of America to DC to gain an interview with the President and the different characters they meet along the way. I think the slow pace of the film in places really helps with the scenes where it is brutal, and trust me, there are some brutal bits in it and they get into scrapes along the way. With some getting killed off, by unknown soldiers fighting for know knows who. To an encounter with some captured journalists and the others set out to rescue them, which nearly leads a couple of them ending up in a mass grave. Throughout the film you are reminded of the civil war going on, with barricades, abandoned cars, through to a main fire fight at the end of the film which was brilliant and fitted the story well. What i also loved about this film is the strong story, it didn't have the feel of a modern film with plot holes, and lets just throw a bit of CGI. The slow pace of the film really helped for the watchability of the film.
I must say the film was believable to a certain degree. I think what stole the show for me, so to speak, was Kirsten Dunst performance it was fantastic and she wasn't all dolled up how you would see her in other movies, she looked a bit rough and it really suited the style of this film. You believed she was this journalist who had seen a lot of things in her life, which again, added to the film as a whole. The whole cast did really well through out the film and should be proud of themselves.
The photography in the film was fantastic and the way some of it was shot gave you a real sense of emotion through the film. One scene that stood out to me, is the 4 main cast members were travelling through a burning forest and it looked like raining embers from trees absolutely brilliant scene. With the characters with their hands out of the car like you would if it was raining.
Would i watch Civil War again?
The simple answer is yes, with its slow pace and gradual build up to a massive fire fight at the end, the brilliant story telling and cinematography through out the film, through to the brilliant cast performances and those bits of the film that made you jump in your seat, there was a couple of those for me.
