Yesterday, was a bit different than planned, what went from, taking flowers to relatives graves, to pay our respects turned into a full day trip at Skegness or Skegvegas in Lincolnshire as its also known.
We set off around 10am from Spalding, and called at our local Lidl to pick up some soft drinks for the road and some flowers to put on the graves. Bit of a morbid subject. But as my dad says there are two things in this world you can be sure of death and taxes. Which is so true.
Anyway, the relatives on dad's side of the family are buried at Sutterton and Algarkirk cemeteries both off the main road between Spalding and Boston. The last trip was to pay respects for my Nan (Alma Boswell) on my mums side of the family at the cemetery in Friskney Lincolnshire.
We had just finished off paying respects when we decided, as so close to Skegness we would head there for the day. The weather was good and we had a free afternoon.
When we arrived at Skegness it was really busy and struggled to find a free car parking space. Sometimes you can get lucky and find a side street to park down. On this day our luck was out, so instead we headed for the first paid car park. The one near the seafront and the old Panda's Palace. If you don't know Panda's Palace, a chance you may not, if of a certain generation but was a fantastic place to go growing up. Anyway I got side tracked there.
So we parked up at the pre-payment car park and was £3 for 3 hours which I thought was really good.
Next we needed to find somewhere for a bite to eat. Dad suggested the pub but I really fancied fish & chips. We walked up to the clock tower and crossed the road and found a chippy that had space. A big problem when its busy in Skegness. The place was nice right near the clock tower. We got seated and the server took our orders and we waited for about 10-15 minutes as the server said it would be that long. The food wasn't the cheapest, but you do pay more for quality. The meal was fantastic. Food tasted really good, fish was fresh. Mum and dad had a salad. The portion sizes were really good and we all enjoyed our meals. The bill came to £57 so roughly £19 each which I don't think is too bad for a meal and a drink these days.
So we paid up and had a wonder. Dad really fancied playing 10 pin bowling so we had a wonder in the direction of the arcades. With a stop off at a local popup stall selling postcards. Dad bought some 4 for £2 which isn't too bad. Anyway we arrived at the pier which is a short walk from the clock tower. Dad had a go at a couple of the arcade machines and we headed down stairs for a game of 10 pin bowling. Been going to the pier in Skegness for years as my Nan on mums side used to have a flat along the sea front. I know Skegness isn't everyone's cup of tea but to me its fantastic it brings back so many childhood memories when we went to visit Nan.
Back to the bowling. It cost £5 per person per game. Which I don't think is too bad for a game of bowls. The staff were really helpful. But me and dad played and mum watched for most of it, before giving it a go her self and we all had a fantastic time. If your a pro 10 pin bowling person. They put live football on the TV during the game and completely threw off my ability. Sure you expect the sports bar at the pier to have a certain amount of noise but was too distracting. Dad did the best he could having not played in years. Same with me, but, the main thing is we all had a great time.
Once we had finished our game of 10 pin bowls it was time to head back to the car park as it was approaching the cut off time for the ticket. 3 hours soon flies by when you go and have a bite to eat, have a walk around and do a couple of activities. Part of me wished I should have paid for more hours as we were having such a good time. A lovely way to spend an afternoon, really was.
