Well what can I say, i had heard that Alien Romulus was out at the cinema and decided to go and check it out with my mate Ross at our local Showcase cinema in Peterborough.
We both arrived at the cinema early by about 10 minutes, but fear not, with adverts and trailers, a film that was scheduled to start at 4:45pm ended up starting at 5:25. So plenty of time to get treats etc.
On to Business
This film has alot of good points and kind of not what i was experiencing from an Alien film after the gap between the messy later ones. But this film is directed by Ridley Scott and has a classic horror feel to it. There are plenty of horror shock moments in the film and it nicely ties into the Alien's universe in terms of plot and story line.
The film is set couple of decades after the very first alien movie. Its about a group of friends both human and synthetic who go on a scavenging mission with the hope of leaving a mining planet where they have no hope of leaving. With having grown up there all they knew was the that planet. They hatch a plan to leave the planet and head further out into space. They come across an old space station, where everything seems fine at first, but the longer they are there the more horrible things start to happen to them. Some real shock moments in it. Will they all make it out alive. I like how the old space station nicely ties into the first movie. A little thing but the computers and technology closely follows the original movie. Its little bits like this that make a film more watchable especially if you've seen the others and after alien two they did go down hill a bit.
The other thing, i really liked was the film was about 2 hrs long not counting trailers but the time soon flew by.
Oh, watch out for the mind bending chicken and egg moment at the end, unless the prometheus movies don't count.
Conclusion
With a great plot, strong story telling, excellent character development, i would say this is the best Alien's movie I've seen in a long time. With its ties back to the very first movie its a strong contender to be up there for what alien 2 or 3 should have been. I also liked that it was all set in the same Alien universe. Unlike the marvel movies where, if a movie has plot holes or doesn't tie in, then lets say its part of the multiverse. With this film there is none of that and is a refreshing change from that. If you want a good horror to watch then I would highly recommend this film.
